The mechanical leverage needed to safely handle a long string of pipe is gained through the hoisting or travelling block. This block contains one (1) or more sheaves depending on the weight to be lifted. Travelling blocks can double and triple the weight lifting capacity of the engine, draw-works, etc. The limiting factor is the capacity of the mast or derrick.
